Press-Locked Grating — PLG-19-4

Smooth-top press-locked grating with flush top surface for architectural applications.

ISO Certified

Fast Delivery

Press-locked grating is a bar grating manufactured by mechanically pressing cross bars into notched bearing bars under high pressure. Unlike welded grating, the intersections do not depend on visible welds which gives the finished panel a uniform flush surface.

The PLG-19-4 is part of AMMS Global's bar grating range. Its smooth top profile makes it particularly relevant where the appearance of the grating matters alongside its functional requirements.

PLG-19-4 Press Locked Grating Specifications

The PLG-19-4 is designed around the 19-P-4 press-locked configuration. In common bar grating terminology 19 identifies the bearing bar spacing while P identifies press-locked construction and 4 indicates a 4-inch cross bar spacing.

Press Locked Steel Grating for Architectural Applications

Press locked steel grating provides an open grid surface while maintaining a cleaner visual profile than conventional welded construction. The mechanically locked cross bars create a regular pattern with no weld marks across the top surface.

This makes press-locked construction useful for architectural floors, commercial spaces, visible platforms and applications where the grating forms part of the overall design. Material selection still needs to consider loading, span, support conditions and environmental exposure.

For projects requiring a more conventional industrial construction method, compare it with Welded Bar Grating. Welded construction joins the bearing bars and cross bars at their intersections and is widely used for industrial platforms, walkways and drainage applications.

Where Is Press Locked Bar Grating Used?

Press locked bar grating can be used in architectural and industrial environments where an open surface with a consistent appearance is required. Typical applications include:

  • Architectural flooring

  • Commercial walkways

  • Interior platforms

  • Mezzanine flooring

  • Access platforms

  • Railing infill

  • Stair applications

  • Equipment access areas

  • Drainage and ventilation surfaces

The open structure allows light, air and liquid to pass through the panel. Application-specific load requirements should be checked before selecting the bearing bar size and spacing.

How Do You Select Press Locked Grating?

Selection should begin with the required load, span and support arrangement. Bearing bar dimensions and spacing need to match the expected pedestrian or equipment loading.

The environment is another important consideration. Carbon steel can be suitable for general applications while stainless steel or aluminium may be considered where corrosion resistance or reduced weight is important. AMMS Global also supplies Aluminium Grating and Stainless Steel Grating for applications with different material requirements.

Surface requirements should also be reviewed. The PLG-19-4 has a smooth top surface which can be appropriate where a flush appearance is required. Areas exposed to oil, water or other slippery conditions may require a different surface configuration.

Panel dimensions, bearing bar direction, open area and fastening method should be confirmed before fabrication. These details affect installation as well as the final performance of the grating.

Press Locked Grating Compared With Other Options

Press-locked construction is one of several bar grating manufacturing methods. Bar Grating includes welded and press-locked configurations that can be selected according to project requirements.

Where corrosion resistance and electrical insulation are priorities, Fiberglass Grating provides a non-metallic alternative. For industrial platform applications, Platform Grating provides another open flooring option. Floor Grating can be considered for broader flooring and drainage requirements.

For applications requiring a formed anti-slip surface rather than a traditional bar grid, Grip Strut Grating offers a different construction approach.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is press locked grating?

Press locked grating is an open metal grating made by mechanically pressing cross bars into notched bearing bars. The connection creates a flush surface without the visible weld marks associated with welded grating.

What is the difference between press locked and welded grating?

The main difference is the joining method. Press locked grating mechanically locks the cross bars into the bearing bars while welded grating joins the bars through welding at their intersections.

What does 19-P-4 mean in press locked grating?

The 19-P-4 designation identifies a press-locked grating configuration. The 19 refers to the bearing bar spacing designation while P identifies press-locked construction and 4 refers to the cross bar spacing in inches.

Where is press locked steel grating used?

Press locked steel grating is commonly used for architectural flooring, platforms, walkways, railing infill and other applications where an open grid and clean flush appearance are required. The appropriate configuration depends on load, span, support conditions and the project environment.
